I wrote this song in tribute to Mark Sandman of Morphine who died back in '99. He unfortunately didn't make it to '9/9/99, I'll be sittin' on the back porch drinking red wine' (French Fries with Pepper). He lived without regrets and died playing onstage which is at least a good way to go.
Underwater is about being in so deep with someone (good or bad) that you feel as if they are the ocean surrounding you. Lots of FX and synths in this one, with spacey guitar, dark and moody.
lyrics
Your nebulosity confounds me
Your grandiosity surrounds me
You took me like a tsunami
I'm sinking deeper deeper deeper
Which way is up when your weightless
You know there's no light at the bottom of the sea
Creatures of the deep in my backyard
Waiting to analyze me
I'm underwater, underwater
You've got me held underwater
When it's sink or swim
Feels like I'm wearing lead boots
I'm underwater
Lost in the shadow of the manta ray
20,000 leagues of gravity
I'm only speaking in bubbles
It's getting darker darker darker
Sometimes I think I remember the sun
Other times you're the only one
But when I breathe your water into my lungs
I get the feeling that I'm trapped
Underwater, underwater
You've got me held underwater
When it's sink or swim
Feels like I'm wearing lead boots
I'm underwater
